WINDMILL SO BEAUTIFUL LEMITAR

WINDMILL OF THE MIND. THIS ONE LOCATED IN LEMITAR NEW MEXICO.
IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE WEST WINDMILLS WERE FIRST THOUGHT TO BE A WASTE OF TIME, THAT IS UNTIL WATER BECAME SCARCE. INNOVATIVE WAYS OF USING THE MILL EXPANDED FROM MILL WORKS TO WATER. RAIN WATER WAS SHUNTED TO RESERVOIR'S FOR USE IN FIELDS FOR CROPS AND TO SMALL TANKS FOR CATTLE. BUT WHEN THERE WAS A DROUGHT THE MEANS OF SAVING EVERYTHING FELL TO THE WINDMILL. AND IT CERTAINLY DID IT'S JOB.

WE ARE NOW IN THE STAGE OF PERFECTING THE USE OF THE WINDMILL TO THE PURPOSE OF GENERATING ELECTRICITY.

KELLY MINE AND TOWN

IN 1900 NEEDLESS TO SAY THE KELLY MINE WAS THE BIGGEST EMPLOYER, MINERS CAME AND STAYED TILL THERE STAKE WAS UP TO SUPPORT FOR A GOOD PERIOD OF TIME.

KELLY HAD THE AMINITIES OF MOST WESTERN TOWNS, GENERAL STORE. ROOMING HOUSE, CAFE, AND OF COURSE A BAR.

SOME OF THE TOWN FOLK HAD TO WALK TO WORK UP HILL AND DOWN HILL BOTH DIRECTIONS TO GET THE MINE, LIVING ON THE SIDE OF A HILL COULD BE TOUGH.

KERMIT NEW MEXICO

THIS IS THE WAY IT WAS ABOUT 1910, IN KERMIT NEW MEXICO. IT WAS A DUSTY PLACE, BUT IT WAS A CLEAN PLACE. NOTICE THERE IS NO TRASH AROUND. ALSO THERE WERE DRESSY FOLKS ABOUT.

MERCANTILE LIVERY ROOMING HOUSE

ONE OF THE MORE SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES OF THE SOUTHWEST WAS THAT OF A MERCHANT AND THEIR MERCANTILE STORES.
THIS ONE, BECKER - MCTAVIS + CO., CARRIED MOST OF THE GOODS REQUIRED OF THE TIME, LEATHER AND LINEN GOODS, CROCKERY, SILVERWARE, BUILDING MATERIALS, FARM SUPPLIES INCLUDING THE HATED BARB (BOB) WIRE.

THE LIVERY STABLE HERE "HORN AND NOBLOCK" NOT ONLY TOOK CARE OF YOUR HORSE BUT WOULD ALSO PUT THE COWBOY UP FOR A TIME TOO.

The beautiful and different McTavis House is a structure still in use as a family home.

MAGDALENA AS COW TOWN 1910 & 1940

1910 MAGDALENA SLIGHTLY WET

TOWNS WATER SUPPLY 1940

STOCK YARDS 1910

MAGDALENA, AROUND 1910 WAS A THRIVING LITTLE COWTOWN EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A LARGE MINING CONTINGENT LIVING HERE. IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT THERE WAS 10 OR MORE HOTELS AND IN EXCESS OF 20 SALOONS.

MAGDALENA BUSINESS OLD/NEW

MAGDALENA MERCANTILE SUPPLIED THE SURROUNDING RANCHES AND LOCAL COMMUNITY
WITH THE NEEDS OF THE DAY.

MAGDALENA HOTEL AFTER MAJOR RENOVATION, NOW RENTS APARTMENTS.

BEFORE BECOMING A DRUG STORE THIS BUILDING HOUSED AN EARLY NEW MEXICO BANK.

MAGDALENA MOUNTAIN

THE COLOR OF THE MOUNTAIN I AM TOLD IS DUE TO OXIDATION OF THE IRON ORE ON THE MOUNTAIN.
Magdalena Mountain and the Lady on the mountain that is formed by the trees and leaving a clearing for a ladies profile some say, St. Mary Magdalene, name of the village. Especially visible in the summer time when it is green because that area is bare. Hard to see at first but once you find it you can always see it.

DATIL A COWTOWN TO LOVE

Navajo woman weaver at loom makeing a rug.

NAVAJO LODGE IN DATIL AROUND 1920, CHECK THE OLD CARS.

THE EAGLE GUEST RANCH IN DATIL NEW MEXICO IS NOT REALLY A RANCH AS MUCH AS IT IS A GROCERY, RESTAURANT, SERVICE STATION IN THE MIDDLE OF DATIL. HAVING NOT BEEN THERE IN SOME TIME ALL I CAN RECALL IS THE SIZE OF THE STEAK IT WAS AS IF THEY WERE USING A SMALLER DINNER PLATE AS THERE WAS A LOT OF STEAK TO EAT. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY SPECIALS USED TO BE MOUNTAIN OYSTERS AND SWEETBREADS DON'T KNOW IF THEY STILL DO.

VERY LARGE ARRAY

THE NATIONS 'VERY LARGE ARRAY' IF THERE IS SOMEONE OUT 'THERE' TRYING TO REACH US THEN THIS IS THE PLACE THAT MAY INTERCEPT THEIR MESSAGE. LOCATED BETWEEN MAGDALENA AND DATIL ON WHAT WAS ONCE A WORKING RANCH.

AUGUSTINE PLAINS

The windmill is on the San Augustin Plains.........must be either on or by Jack Bruton's ranch. Looks like a tank for watering cattle.......not sure. Look close to the bottom over the hill about the middle of the picture ..I think that is an antenna at VLA.

Click on the center of this and get a panoramic view of one of the many things that New Mexicans miss when they move away. The glorious view of God's gift to us is etched in the mind of most New Mexicans and also long time residents from the other places of the great country.

SAN ANTONIO OWL BAR AND CAFE

We are showing this picture of a green chili cheese burger as only from the OWL BAR and CAFE in San Antonio New Mexico. As a boy I would frequent this establishment in the summer when I would come here to get lunch for myself and possibly my helper if I was so lucky to have one, share cropping was often hit and miss as far as help was concerned.

ELEPHANT BUTTE AT "T OR C"

BEFORE THE DAM.

NOW ALTHOUGH THE WATER LEVEL IS DOWN.

THE ORIGINAL CITY OF HOT SPRINGS IN THE 1940'S TOOK UP A CHALLENGE BY A RADIO QUIZ SHOW TO CHANGE THEIR NAME. I DON'T RECALL THE INCENTIVE HOWEVER HOT SPRINGS DID IN FACT CHANGE ITS NAME TO TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES AND AN ADJOINING COMMUNITY THEN TOOK THE NAME OF HOT SPRINGS.

THE CITY OF "T OR C" AND THE ADJOINING ELEPHANT BUTTE DAM HAVE BEEN VISITED BY TRAVELERS FROM NEARLY EVERY CORNER OF THE EARTH, AND SOME FOLKS SAY FROM BEYOND ALSO?

ORGAN MOUNTAINS LAS CRUCES

THE SPLENDOR OF NEW MEXICO CAN BE FOUND NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO IN THE STATE, THE RICH BROWNS OF THE GOOD EARTH, THE BEAUTIFUL SHADES OF WILD FLOWERS AND CHANGING COLORS IN THE FALL REMIND US OF HOW LUCKY WE ARE,

WHITE SANDS AT NIGHT

"IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT, WHILE THE WORLD IS IN SLUMBER, AND THE TIMES WITHOUT NUMBER, MY THOUGHTS TURN TO YOU" AND AS COLE PORTER WROTE IN HIS CLEAR CONCISE SONGS MY THOUGHTS DO TURN TO YOU, NEW MEXICO, AND FRIENDS. DAA

BALLOON FLIGHT AT THE SANDS

THE BEAUTIFUL CHILI PEPPER BALLOON OWNED BY A SOCORRO RESIDENT AND ENTERED IN THE BALLOON FESTIVAL AT WHITE SANDS.

JEMEZ MISSION, HOME, OVEN

The ruins of one of the many early Missions. Most of these missions were built of adobe as this was a more economical means for the generally poor parishes.

Adobe ovens provided the controlled heat for the baking of various breads and other
mixtures of meals.

Typical adobe home of the Southwest, this type of structure is in great demand even now. The atributes of heat retention in the winter and cooling in the summer are a most desirabe feature. The cost differential from the early times to now has gone up considerable however the savings in fuel (heating) cost still make this the best buy.

OVENS, CHILI, AND THINGS

THE OVEN PICTURED HERE IS TYPICAL OF THE OVENS USED THROUGH OUT THE VARIOUS INDIAN NATIONS. FOR SOME REASON THE "OVEN" HAS BEEN MORE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE NATIONS OF NEW MEXICO e.g. HOPI, APACHE, NAVAJO, CHIMAYO, TAOS, SAN ILDEFONSO, AND MANY OTHER TRIBES ALONG THE RIO GRANDE INTO COLORADO.

CHILI PEPPERS HANGING TO DRY 'RISTRAS'. TRADITIONAL METHOD OF PRESERVING CHILI BY DRYING AND IS A COMMON SIGHT AS YOU TRAVEL ABOUT THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO DURING THE CHILI SEASON.

We normally do not give Albuquerque much but in this case we offer up two items. This Indian Oven discovered in a walk-about alley.

The second item is this picture of an old adobe with adobe ovens found in OLD
TOWN Albuquerque.
